Notes are not being generated
Retrying, and working out the cause, when no summary is produced after a meeting.
This covers what to do when a meeting has finished but no formatted note appears, when you see a message saying generation failed, or when a blank note is produced. Working through it in order separates the cases a retry fixes from those where no transcript was captured in the first place.
Pulse generates a note automatically once a meeting has ended and a transcript has been captured. The summary is built from the transcript, so generation cannot succeed for a meeting with no transcript. A notification arrives when generation finishes. If your settings mean no notification arrives, check Notification settings.
Try these in order
Wait a few minutes
For a long meeting, or on a slow connection, generation can take a few minutes. A notification arrives when it is ready.
Press the retry button
Where the message saying generation failed has a retry button, click it. A retry connects to the AI model over a different route from the first attempt. Where the cause was a temporary connection failure, this generates the note.
Regenerate it by hand
Where there is no retry button, or where a blank note was produced, run the regeneration yourself. At the top of the note, switch to the tab showing the formatted note, click the downward arrow beside the tab name, and in the menu that appears click the regenerate button (🔁) beside the template in use. You can also open the template list from the “✨” button at the top right of the note and use the same regenerate button. That, and how to rebuild it with a different template, are explained in AI-formatted notes.
Check whether a transcript was captured
Where regenerating still produces nothing, check whether a transcript exists at all. Clicking the three-vertical-lines icon on the floating bar at the bottom of the note opens the transcript panel.
Where there is no transcript at all, there is nothing for the summary to work from and generation cannot succeed. That means no audio was captured. The same goes for an extremely short transcript: where only the other person's voice, or only your own, is present, permission for either system audio or the microphone may be missing. Check your audio device settings and operating system permissions using the steps in Transcription is not working.
Check the language setting
Where the transcript or the note is in an unintended language, see Multi-language support to set the meeting language, then regenerate. In meetings that mix Japanese and English, the output can be inconsistent depending on the setting.
There is a reasonable amount of the meeting in the transcript panel, and running a regeneration still produces no note. In that state, the cause lies on the generation side. Go on to the network checks below.
A note cannot be rebuilt afterwards for a meeting with no transcript. Audio is captured on your machine as it happens, so there is no way to obtain the audio alone after the meeting has ended. Before an important meeting, check everything works using the test steps in Transcription is not working.
Where the network is the cause
On a corporate network, a VPN or behind a firewall, traffic needed for generation can be blocked and the process fail. The summary is delivered progressively, so where a proxy is configured to receive the whole response before forwarding it (buffering), generation can stall without progressing. Where the transcript is fine and only the summary stalls, suspect this.
Switching to a different network and seeing whether the symptom disappears narrows it down. The steps for doing that, the symptoms blocking produces, the list of destinations to allow and a template request for your IT department are all in Network and allowlists.
If none of this resolves it
If the steps above do not resolve it, contact tharada@the-unchain.com. Including the following helps us investigate faster.
- The date and time of the meeting concerned (in a form that shows the time zone) and roughly how long it was
- Whether a transcript remains in the transcript panel, and roughly how much
- The name of the template in use
- How many times you tried a retry or a regeneration, and what happened
- The error message shown on screen (in its exact wording, if there is one)
- Your network environment (corporate LAN, VPN or not, proxy or not)
- The Pulse app version
Please do not delete the note concerned until the investigation is finished. Deleting it loses the transcript with it, and the cause can no longer be identified.
