Automatic Google Meet chat notices (for individuals)
Setting up a notice sent in Google Meet when a meeting starts.
This setting posts a notice automatically in the Google Meet chat when you start transcribing. Install the browser extension once and it is posted thereafter with nothing to do per meeting. The steps are the same on macOS and Windows.
You need two things: the Pulse desktop app (macOS / Windows), and Google Chrome or a supported Chromium-based browser (Microsoft Edge, Arc, Brave). Other browsers are not supported at this time. Even if you use the Google Meet desktop app, this feature runs in the browser, so you have to join meetings from a supported browser.
This article is for enabling the notice on your own account. If you are an administrator applying it across a workspace, see Google Meet settings (for admins). Where an administrator distributes the extension, the installation steps below may not be needed.
Installing the browser extension
Open the transparency settings
In the desktop app, open Settings > Preferences > Transparency > Automatic chat notice.
Start setup
Find “Google Meet automatic chat notice” in the list and click “Set up” on the right.
Open the store page
Click “Install extension” on the setup screen. The Pulse extension's page on the Chrome Web Store opens in your browser.
Add it to your browser
On the store page, click “Add to Chrome” and allow it in the confirmation dialog.
Confirm the connection and finish
Go back to Pulse's setup screen. Once the extension's status changes to “Connected”, click “Continue” to finish.
The “Google Meet automatic chat notice” row with a “Set up” button to its right.
A setup window titled “Add a notice to Google Meet chat”, with an “Install extension” button.
The setup window with the extension's status showing “Connected” and the “Continue” button ready to press.
If it does not show as “Connected” straight after adding it on the store page, close the browser tab and check Pulse's screen again. If that does not help, quitting and reopening the browser often gets it recognised.
Open Settings > Preferences > Transparency > Automatic chat notice and confirm “Google Meet automatic chat notice” shows as “Connected”. To be sure, also open a test meeting with at least one other participant in a supported browser, start transcribing, and confirm the message is posted once in the chat.
When it works
The notice is posted when the following are true.
- transcription has started. The trigger is opening a note and audio capture beginning.
- at least one participant other than you has joined. It is not posted while you are alone in the meeting.
It is posted once per meeting. Even if you lose connection and rejoin, it is not posted twice in the same meeting.
How it looks to participants
- The posted message is pinned at the top of the chat panel and stays visible to people who join partway through.
- Someone joining late from outside your organisation may not see it, depending on that meeting's chat settings. For meetings with external attendees, saying it out loud at the start as well is the reliable approach.
- Where Google Workspace's “Continuous Meeting Chat” is enabled, the message is posted but not pinned. The remedy is under “If something is not working” below.
What information the extension handles
For posting the notice, all the extension does is send a message to the chat field. It does not access the meeting's audio, video or transcript.
Using speaker labels in Google Meet as well, the extension reads who is speaking and participants' names for that feature. That is for attaching speaker labels, not for the notice.
If something is not working
Q. I installed the extension but no message is posted
A. First check that another participant has joined and that transcription has started. If both are true, check whether the browser you joined the meeting in is a supported one and whether the extension is installed in that browser. Where people use several browsers, the one with the extension is often not the one used to join.
Q. The message is not pinned
A. Where “Continuous Meeting Chat” is enabled in Google Workspace, the message is posted but not pinned. That setting is changed by your Google Workspace administrator and cannot be changed in your own settings. Check with your administrator, or share Google Meet settings (for admins) with them.
Q. I cannot find “Google Meet automatic chat notice” in settings
A. Your desktop app may be out of date. Update it to the latest version and reopen Settings > Preferences > Transparency. It can also be hidden where your organisation's administrator has restricted the feature.
Q. Does removing the extension stop the notice?
A. Removing the extension stops automatic posting to Google Meet. Note, though, that where your organisation's administrator has made the notice mandatory workspace-wide, transcription may be restricted without the extension installed.
