MCP server

How to connect MCP-compatible AI tools so they can consult your Pulse notes.

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is a common standard by which AI tools retrieve data from, and operate on, external services. A compatible AI tool connects to an “MCP server” built to that standard and can then call the functions that service exposes from within a conversation. Pulse provides an MCP server, so compatible tools such as Claude and ChatGPT can search and read your meeting notes. You can use it to find something discussed in a past meeting, list your folders, pull decisions and tasks out of a note, or have questions answered from your meeting history.

There are two ways to connect: OAuth in a browser, and Enterprise-Managed Authorization (EMA), available with supported identity providers and MCP clients. OAuth in a browser is enough in most cases; EMA is for when you want to manage connection centrally as an organisation.

About the URLs

This article writes the MCP server URL as https://mcp.the-unchain.com/mcp and the authorisation server URL as https://mcp-auth.the-unchain.com. Replace them with the endpoints you actually publish.

What MCP can see

With OAuth in a browser, MCP acts as the individual user who connected. With EMA, your organisation's identity provider decides who may connect. Either way, what comes back is only the notes that user can see which belong to the currently selected workspace.

Notes created in another workspace are not included, even if sharing makes them visible from the current one.

Scope Notes it can see
Personal notes notes you own in the current workspace / notes shared directly with you in the current workspace / notes in private folders shared with you in the current workspace
Public notes notes everyone in the current workspace can see / notes in the current workspace's team space

Which scope applies is determined by your plan and your workspace settings.

Plan Scopes available through MCP
Free plan personal notes from the last 30 days. Some tools for folders, search and transcripts are only available on paid plans
Personal and Team plans personal notes and public notes
Enterprise plan administrators set the scopes members are allowed. With neither enabled, members cannot use MCP
About plan names

The plan names are provisional within this help centre. Adjust them to match UNCHAIN, Inc.'s actual plans.

MCP follows the workspace currently selected in the Pulse app. If you belong to several workspaces, switch workspace in Pulse before asking the AI tool. MCP never covers notes from several workspaces at once.

Connecting

How you connect differs by MCP client. Follow the steps on the relevant tab.

What you need first
  • a Pulse account with meeting notes already saved
  • an MCP-compatible AI tool (Claude, ChatGPT and so on)
  • on the Enterprise plan, that an administrator has enabled MCP access for members
  1. Open Claude and sign in.
  2. Open settings.
  3. Search the connector list for Pulse.
  4. Connect and authenticate, and check the toggle is on when you use it in a chat.
  1. Open ChatGPT and sign in.
  2. Open settings.
  3. Search for Pulse and connect.
  4. Once connected, use it by typing @ followed by the connector name, or simply asking in prose for it to consult your meetings.
  1. Run claude in a terminal.
  2. Run the following command.
claude mcp add notes --transport http https://mcp.the-unchain.com/mcp
  1. Open a new terminal tab and run claude again.
  2. /mcp, choose the server you added (notes in the example above) and select “Authenticate”.
  3. Once authentication finishes in the browser, you can ask it to consult your meetings.

You can connect manually by specifying the public URL https://mcp.the-unchain.com/mcp as a custom connection. The tool you use has to meet the following.

  • an MCP client implementation over the Streamable HTTP transport
  • support for OAuth 2.0 authentication and metadata discovery — in the standard flow, the tool must be able to open a browser window and ask the user to sign in to Pulse. After signing in, the tool receives a bearer token to include in subsequent requests.

For Enterprise, EMA can be used instead of the standard sign-in flow.

Either way, a connection always acts with the permissions of an individual Pulse account. MCP has no connection method using API keys or service accounts. To retrieve notes from scheduled scripts or your own systems, use the API rather than MCP.

Check
  • Pulse shows as connected in the AI tool's connector list
  • asking the AI tool “which Pulse account am I connected as?” returns the email address and workspace you expect

Available tools

Once connected, the AI tool can call the following.

Tool What it does Example request
Ask about meetings Ask questions about meeting content in plain language. It works on the same principle as Asking your notes questions (chat) What concerns came up repeatedly in last month's sales meetings?
List folders paid plans only — returns the folders you can access, including folder ID, name, description and note count Which meeting folders can I access?
List meetings returns the meeting notes you can access, including meeting ID, title, date and attendees. On paid plans you can filter by folder Show me last week's meetings with Sato-san
Read a meeting note returns the body of a meeting note you can access, including meeting ID, title, date, attendees, your own notes and the AI-enhanced note What tasks are outstanding for each owner on this project?
Get a transcript paid plans only — retrieves the raw transcript for a given meeting ID Quote, in their own words, how the team described this problem
Get account information returns the email address of the Pulse account the current MCP session is connected as, and the selected workspace. Useful for checking you are connected as intended where you have several accounts, such as personal and work Which Pulse account am I connected as?
Tool naming

The tools' internal names appear in the AI tool you connect. Adjust the wording to match UNCHAIN, Inc.'s implementation.

About passing data to external AI tools

With MCP connected, meeting notes and transcripts are sent to the provider operating the connected AI tool each time you ask something. Notes normally contain personal data such as attendees' names, email addresses and what they said.

Decide the permitted destinations as an organisation

For organisational use, decide in advance which AI tools may be connected, so that users do not connect to arbitrary tools. On the Enterprise plan, administrators can control the scopes, so you can roll it out with the scope narrowed. How to account for sending to external services as handling of personal data is covered in Integrations overview.

Enterprise-Managed Authorization (EMA)

EMA lets you manage MCP connection through your own identity provider (IdP). Users sign in to the MCP client with their company account, and the IdP decides whether they may connect to Pulse.

The division of responsibility is: the IdP controls who can connect, and Pulse's workspace settings control which notes they can access.

What you need first
  • an Enterprise workspace with single sign-on (SSO) configured
  • an EMA-capable IdP and MCP client (UNCHAIN, Inc. has verified the combination of Claude and Okta)
  • administrator rights on both the Pulse workspace and the IdP, or the cooperation of each administrator
  • a Pulse account linked to the company identity for each user. Anyone who has never signed in to Pulse through company SSO should do so once before using EMA
  1. Enable MCP scopes in Pulse

Settings → Workspace → General → Apps & connectors → MCP access for members and enable the scopes you want to permit.

  2. Prepare the application on the IdP

Add or select the Pulse application on your IdP and enable managed authorization or the resource server capability.

  3. Create a managed resource connection

Create a managed resource connection from the MCP client to Pulse.

  4. Enter the connection values

Enter the following. Field names vary by IdP, and some values may be filled in automatically.

    Field Value
    Resource URL https://mcp.the-unchain.com/mcp
    Issuer URL https://mcp-auth.the-unchain.com
    ID-JAG audience https://mcp-auth.the-unchain.com
    Scope mcp
Client ID at resource the URL of the MCP client's Client ID Metadata Document
  5. Assign users

Assign the users or groups to both Pulse and the MCP client, and activate the managed resource connection.

With EMA, assigned users do not go through Pulse's OAuth consent screen individually. What they can access still follows both the IdP's policy and the MCP scopes set in Pulse.

Example: Claude and Okta

We have verified the combination of Claude and Okta Cross App Access (XAA).

  1. Add the Pulse integration in Okta.
  2. Resource server tab and enable Cross App Access (XAA).
  3. Follow Okta's steps to configure a resource server connector between Claude and Pulse.
  4. Client ID at resource, specify https://claude.ai/oauth/mcp-oauth-client-metadata.

Building your own MCP client

Pulse supports confidential clients that authenticate through a Client ID Metadata Document (CIMD) using private_key_jwt. Clients authenticate with their own key pair rather than a client secret issued by UNCHAIN, Inc..

The client-side requirements are as follows.

  • implement the MCP EMA extension
  • obtain an ID-JAG from your own IdP
  • private_key_jwt and jwks_uri declared, served over public HTTPS

Retrieve the supported capabilities and endpoints from Pulse's OAuth metadata. For the client assertion's audience, use the issuer value published in that metadata as-is. For the detailed protocol requirements, see the MCP EMA specification.

If something is not working

Q. What are the rate limits?

A. They depend on your plan and the MCP client. As a guide at present, roughly 100 requests per minute on average across all tools. The limits may change. Note that the free plan covers only notes from the last 30 days.

Q. The MCP tools do not work

A. Where the AI tool says it cannot access your meeting notes or cannot use the tools, re-authenticate first. Disconnecting and reconnecting often restores it.

Q. Claude says “no tools available”

A. Where it should be connected but no tools appear, reconnect the connector on Claude's side to reset the connection state.

  1. Open Claude's connector settings on the web. This has to be done on the web even if you use the desktop app.
  2. Choose the Pulse connector.
  3. Open the three-dot menu at the top right.
  4. Choose “Disconnect”.
  5. Without reloading the page or navigating away, choose “Connect” and complete authentication.

If you are on an organisational plan in Claude, you may need to ask your Claude workspace administrator to do this.

Q. I get an “account not created” error

A. If this appears after completing OAuth sign-in, you may have authenticated with an address other than the one registered in Pulse.

Your Pulse account's email address is shown under your profile picture at the top left when you open settings in the app (⌘ + , on macOS, Ctrl + , on Windows). When reconnecting MCP, sign in on the OAuth screen with that address.

Q. MCP finds no notes at all

A. Where you expect meetings but get no results, the connected account, or the workspace within that account, may not be the one you expect.

First ask the AI tool “which Pulse account am I connected as?”. That calls the account information tool and returns the connected email address and the selected workspace. Then:

  • If the email address is right but the workspace is wrong: click the workspace name at the top left of the desktop app and switch to the workspace you want. MCP follows the selected workspace, so it applies from the next query.
  • If the email address itself is wrong: follow “If you signed in with the wrong account” below to disconnect and reconnect with the right account.
Q. If you signed in with the wrong account

A. Using Claude as the example:

  1. Open a private browsing window and sign in to claude.ai.
  2. Settings → Connectors and disconnect Pulse.
  3. Reconnect while still in the private window. You will be asked to sign in; sign in with the email address of the Pulse account you want.
  4. Once connected, go back to your normal browser. It will now work with the right account.

The reason disconnecting and reconnecting in a normal window does not fix it is that your Pulse session is still valid and the sign-in step is skipped. A private window forces sign-in again, letting you choose the account.

Frequently asked questions

Q. Do the AI tool and Pulse have to use the same email address?

A. No. You can use separate accounts. When authenticating, sign in with the Pulse account you want the AI tool to access. Your Pulse account's email address is shown under your profile picture at the top left when you open settings in the app (⌘ + , on macOS, Ctrl + , on Windows).

Q. Why can I not access a particular note?

A. First check which scope applies to you.

  • Free plan: personal notes from the last 30 days
  • Personal and Team plans: personal notes and public notes
  • Enterprise plan: the scopes your administrator has set

The personal notes scope covers notes you own, notes shared directly with you, and notes in private folders shared with you. Note that it does not cover every private note in the workspace. The public notes scope covers notes everyone in the workspace can see, including those in the team space.

MCP also returns only notes belonging to the selected workspace. Notes created in another workspace are not returned from the current one, even if you can see them in Pulse.

You can check the connected account and workspace by asking the AI tool “which Pulse account am I connected as?”.

Q. I moved from the free plan to a paid plan. When do the extra tools become available?

A. Immediately. The additional tools and relaxed rate limits apply from your next query.

Q. Do I need a client ID or client secret?

A. Not for a standard browser OAuth connection. MCP connections use Dynamic Client Registration (DCR), so credentials are handled automatically. There is no client ID or client secret to generate or enter.

If a third-party platform such as Composio shows fields for a client ID and client secret, leave them blank. The platform registers automatically when connecting.

EMA is different. When the IdP creates a managed connection it may ask for a Client ID at resource. Enter the URL of the MCP client's Client ID Metadata Document there. With an existing MCP client such as Claude, use the URL that client provides. You do not need to create one, and no client secret is required.

If you build your own confidential client, you create and host its Client ID Metadata Document yourself. That document's URL becomes the client ID, and the client authenticates with its own private key rather than a secret issued by UNCHAIN, Inc..

Q. Can an AI tool we built internally connect?

A. Yes. Any tool implementing the MCP client specification over the Streamable HTTP transport can connect. Authentication can be browser OAuth, or EMA where the tool supports the EMA extension and your IdP supports it. If you run into difficulty implementing it, contact tharada@the-unchain.com.

Frequently asked questions for administrators

Q. Can we use MCP on the Enterprise plan?

A. Yes. Administrators set the scopes permitted to workspace members.

  1. Settings → Workspace → General.
  2. Apps & connectors, find MCP access for members.
  3. Click “Manage”.
  4. Choose “personal notes”, “public notes”, both, or neither.
Q. What can Enterprise members access by default?

A. It depends on the workspace's MCP settings. With neither scope enabled, members cannot use MCP until an administrator enables personal notes or public notes.

Q. I cannot find the MCP access control setting

A. Settings → Workspace → General → Apps & connectors → MCP access for members. Every member of an Enterprise workspace can view this setting, but only administrators can change it. To have a different scope enabled, ask your workspace administrator.

Q. Does the member access control apply to administrators too?

A. No. This setting controls what non-administrator workspace members can see through MCP. Enterprise administrators can access both personal and public notes through MCP.
